Pain Management
A growing body of research shows massage therapy can be an effective part of pain relief and management. Massage is effective for providing long-lasting relief for patients suffering from chronic pain.
The effectiveness of massage lies in a simple and direct strategy: working from the external, outer mechanisms of pain to the primary, root cause. PRESS PAUSE massage therapists utilise a holistic approach, focusing on the entire body system and its relationship to soft tissue, not just the site of pain.
Another benefit of massage therapy from a patient’s perspective is how it helps patients become more aware of their bodies and the pain they experience.
The virtues of human touch…
Research suggests that when you rub an area that is hurting, you are simply preventing the pain message from being sent to the brain. The pain is "gated," so to speak, by the more pleasant experience of massage. Massage acts like an analgesic and inhibits those pain signals from being transmitted to the brain. It is also thought that massage helps the body to release naturally produced chemicals or painkillers, such as opioids or endorphins.
As it stands, enough research exists to encourage pain management specialists and massage therapists to forge professional relationships. PRESS PAUSE has already formed such pain management relationships with hospitals (Dr R Iyer FFARCSI (Consultant in Anaesthesia & Pain Medicine), The Spire Thames Valley hospital), clinics, in private practice offices and in home care.
